Peace & Conflict   Opinions

The Sudan’s history is so long, so complicated and so hurting, that just talking about the history of Sudan brings fresh emotional and physiological effects because of the terrible atrocities that Sudanese people have experienced.

Therefore, this paper attempts to express the major factors of the conflict in Sudan and the main purpose of the conflict. Historically, the conflict has been going since the 1800’s, but became worse in 1965 after the expelling of the Whites (Christian missionaries) from Sudan and the massacre of thousands of black Africans in particular Christians by the Sudanese Arab Government of Khartoum. I am not a man of racism and discrimination because the materials herein are all about Islam and Christianity, Arabs and Black Africans but because I am a human being with feeling that justice and Human Rights must be experienced by all.

Back Ground of the Conflict

Sudan got her independence on 1st January of 1956 and only after three years, an Arab military Officer, General Abboud toppled (overthrown) the Civil government of Sudan. Until now, Sudan has been run by a military Government. The main aims of overthrowing the First President of Sudan were to Arabize and Islamize the country and rid Sudan of Christianity.

The Agenda of the Government of General Abboud was the Arabization and Islamisation of entire Sudan and in that very year (1958), he imposed Islamic Law (Saria) in Sudan and this geared out the first Civil War of 1965 which lasted for at least 10 years (from 1965-1975) when the Addis Ababa Peace Agreement was signed.

The major issue that led to the Signing of the 1975 peace agreement was the Agreement on the Freedom of Religion. It stated that, both Islam and Christian must be honoured by the State but none should be a State owned religion. However, the Government of Sudan dishonoured this Agreement and again in 1978 the Islamic Government of Khartoum imposed another Islamic Law in Sudan, which led Sudan into Civil war in 1982 under the leadership of Col. Dr. John Garange, the Chairman and Commander in Chief of the Sudan People Liberation Movement and Sudan People Liberation Army- (SPLA/M).

This fact hints about the conflict in Sudan is only to give us answers to our questions of the purpose of the conflict in Sudan. The fact about the conflict in Sudan is that, the conflict is not for political leadership or power, it is not for economic gain or control, but the conflict is about defending Christian and Islamic Faiths and culture from being demolished by either the Arabs or Black Africans. The Conflict is for the Democracy of the south, Liberty and freedom of south as well as the human rights of the south. This meant that, the Conflict in Sudan is between good and evil, freedom and slavery, God and Satan’s and above all between the spiritual forces in physical senses. Whether we like it or not, the conflict in Sudan must be our concern and we all going to face it.

“For we do not wrestle against the flesh and blood, but against the principalities, against the powers, against rulers of darkness of this ages, against Spiritual host of wick ness in the Heavenly places” Ephesians 6:2

This was the verse of Sudanese and they were always ready to fight, to die, to suffer and to be persecuted for the sake of their faith and identity as Christians and Muslims, Arabs and Black Africans. Indeed, the conflict in Sudan will never have its end unless if the Black Sudanese are free from the power of Islamisation and Arabisation, and when both religions are freely practicing their culture and faith.

Writer Profile
sudan

I am a South Sudanese, Lawyer by profession and living in South Africa. I am single man and I love writing factual stories and sharing my opinions with the world. One thing I have learnt from this world is that unless we are taught, we cannot know anything at all.

That is not all that I want to tell about myself. I would also like to say that communication is the key to the transformation and development of any society. Where there is no comunication, there is no development.

seeing it from another point

Sudan as one of the developing countries have a problem of Bad Governance, and its' nation as one of the third world nation and eastern nation with a culture of honor values that gained by many means that include "Rule" since they see Rule as some thing honroable much than an assignment and very difficult task that should be done in high quality specifications..also as one of the multi-racial nations - they are many- it suffers of racism, which can be based on color, and in race much than color because in sudan it bases on the Race and Arabian or African roots, which made some thing like isolation against the african roots people/tribes, ..may be the accedent of dividing the two holy religion between the Arabian people and African people is working against the country as well, so it makes any struggling between races " religious" and any struggle between religions "Racial".. it's normal thing that chrisians preech chrisianity and Muslim Preach Islam.. so they work against each other as common religons..whenever one won the other lost.. iam not here to defend Muslim or Arabs, but to say some thing Fair, that arabian people come to the Rule because of Bad Leaders who let the south/erners escape from the development road..who are the reasons that made sudan in 1956 have no enough educated people from South of Sudan, and even have not political participants in the main political movement unless very few people who were living in khartoum or Madani " the next City in Sudan after the Capital"..the geographical and difficult invernment of South of Sudan and the Lack of Roads that link the south and the north was a great reason too to widen the gap between south and north, this what has been done by Leaders Neglecting, and after that the war came as a result and as a due to more of damage in life of the one body so-called Sudan.. if we have to talk about unity and sepration we need another topic like this, and we shall begin with " Sudan Like all other countries who have multi-cultures nation, just like US and France or South African or even Germany and Libya, Moroco or Iraq..Turkey..etc..but it difer with the large area that Mutliply france's area Five times! do u want to seprate every ethnic group ? Beja, Nuba, Nubian " north of sudan" Mapan and Blue Nile Tribes, South of Sudan Tribes and those are many enough to be difficult to unify the State of South of Sudan..so it's some thing else to be discussed.. i really feel happy that some human conversation is being held here, my brother..with all my long feeling i wish to meet u one day, and give u a sudanese to sudanese hug.. i may not forget to tell u that not only south of sudan that needs to be freed, but also every inch of sudan needs to be free..can we put hand on hand? for:- humanity Love and Freedom I DO LIVE..

Religion is the Heart of Conflict in the Sudan
John Sunday Martin, Chairman of Mundri Youth Development Association- (MYDA) | Dec 16th, 2004
Apostle Paul once wrote to the followers of a man called Jesus Christ whom Christians believed to be the son of God or God himself in Human image while the Muslims believed to be only a minor prophet that, their Wrestle is not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, powers, rulers of Darkness of this age and against the host of wickedness in the heavenly places. Ephesians 6:12. of course Omaima, whether we agreed in apostle Paul’s statement to the Followers of this Man Jesus Christ in Ephesus or not, may be let be narrate to you in briefly that the battle in Sudan is not against either the Muslims or Christians, it is not against the flesh or the blood of African Sudanese or the immigrant Arabs but it is against principalities. Dictatorship, Human rights Abuses and racisms that have its roots in the heart of two religions (the Islam and the Christianity). The problem of bad governance in our beloved Country comes into existence because of different Religion Worldview or philosophy on the other religion. Of course as a beautifully Muslim lady, you know it better that, it is Islamic Taboos that none Muslims (which they called none Believers in English or kharfer in Arabic) to lead Muslims who are the believers of Allah. Even among the Muslims themselves, it is a curse for none Arab Muslims are not holy to lead Arab Muslims either in Mosque or out side Mosque. Thus mean that Islamic region viewed both None Arab Muslims and None Muslims not holy or qualified before God and therefore can not lead God’s Holy people the Arabs or Muslims as well as to carry out God’s purposes for all creatures. This Worldview or Taboo geared out Jihad in AD 60 Centuries in Mecca till to date the vision is the Arab Muslims to conquer entire Universe. I think you know how Arabs came into Sudan in AD 600 Centuries but just may be to remind you of encase you forgot the History of Sudan, the Arab Muslims Invaded Sudan in AD 641 Centuries through Aswan after they had conquered Syria, Palestine and Egypt, by then Sudan was known as “Nubian Kingdoms” and their settlement into the Nubian Kingdom’s Capital City Dongola around AD 650s was after great battle with the Nubian Army. They start to extend to other main towns and their coming into leadership of the Nubian Kingdom through intermarriages with the black African Sudanese after producing Children with them. So the coming of Arabs to rule Sudan is not because of bad leaderships as you thought, But because they used force and gained lots of Supports from their Egyptian alias. Just as the case of 1956 which you said Arabs come to rule Sudanese because the Southerners by then have no educated people and are not political participants, thus made me to be in wonder world of whether you are talking in Good faith or not. Historical Sudan became developing Political partum in around 1940 before the end of colonial decades, and these are Uma Part but this party was build on Religion Faith, the National unionist Party was not but later turned also into Religion Faith based political party. Of course the southerners have few educated leaders and are political activists mostly in the National Unionist party which was consisting of both Northerners and southerners because the political objectives of the NU Party was the national unity, Equality and Justices in Sudan of Sudan for Sudanese nationals. However Sudan became to experience an impressive transition from political particism (democracy) to Military Rules or racial Governing system in various forms just shortly after in independence in 1958 when general Abbud toppled the civil and demo-crated government elected pre independent by both the Arabs and our Southern Chiefs. Since the coming of general abbud in power, Sudan was declared to be Arab State and imposed the Islamic Sheria Law on the South which accelerated the 1960s Civil war between the South and Arabs in the North. Even if you may say that the conflict in Sudan is not centred on Religion, I may not partial agree with you because if you only fellow the Addis Abba peace protocol of 1970s, Religion was the core issue that seems to be some what a building block for the achievement of the Peace that was because the Government said Sudan is Islamic Country and must be governed by the Sheria Law. However, later the government came into their sense and agreed on the fact that Sudan should be Free State which either owns or owned by any other Religion but must recognize and treat both religions Islam and Christianity equally before the law. Even in the current peace process in Naiversha Kenya, Religion seems to be the key issue, it is because of these facts, I was convinced to write this article “The reason of Conflict in Sudan” in which you became opposed to. My sister, I felt happy to see you making conversation with me through media on this crucial issue that have divided us people of great Country and faith Sudan
